First Week in NYC: The Recap

She’s baaaaaaack! (That’s me.)

So sorry for the delay, folks! I’m sure you can imagine there’s just no minute like a New York Minute, and lately, I haven’t had many free ones!

My first week as a fashion features/credits intern at Marie Claire Magazine has been the stuff of fashion fairy tales. No, seriously – complete with fluffy armfuls of neon dyed furs from the fashion closet to rest my head upon.

Check out that view! Miracle on 34th Street Floor, am I right?!

And as you can expect, I watched (and rewatched) The Devil Wears Prada more times than I’d care to admit in preparation. This meant I knew how to spell Gabbana, I steered clear of onion bagels and wore not a trace of cerulean anywhere. Probably a bit of an overkill, but I definitely was not interested in being mistaken for a “Before and After” piece.**

(**Please note: If you have not memorized each of the aforementioned scenes above, just continue reading. I promise I’m not crazy. Also, I can confidently say I walked in with a tad more fashion knowledge than Andy was in possession of.)

In fact, I was bursting at the seams with so much fashion knowledge and passion that even many, many many hours logged in the fashion closet on Day 1 couldn’t deter me from returning to Floor 34 with a smile on my face the next day. Getting to see so many luxuriously beautiful items in front of my very eyes, as opposed to through a computer screen at Style.com, kept me re-energized and ready to go. The coffee didn’t hurt either.

On the days when I’m working on credits, I get to assist my internship adviser in doing research for future stories and coming along on meetings with new fashion designers to feature in upcoming spreads. And when lunchtime rolls around, you really can’t beat the Columbus Circle location. (Ice cream 4 dayz. Apologies for the blurry photo – blame fellow intern, Adrienne.)

And in my free time, big sis Carly took me around Brooklyn and Manhattan for Design Week. As a contributing writer for a design blog, she had places to go and people to meet! Which translates into seeing a lot of furniture and light fixtures. All cool, but my favorite part was exploring the Saturday flea markets and figuring out my way around the neighborhood.

The pic below was taken in haste as I made my way back to the apartment during an afternoon rainstorm. Check out that baby seat left outside. *FUN FACT* >> Though this is more of a rare find, kind hearted Brooklynites leave everything from unwanted art and books to old running sneakers outside for passersby. (But beware of the wayward mattress.)

And this strapping yet stylish gal also toted her (and Carly’s!) laundry a few blocks down to the laundromat. Never missed my washer until I didn’t have it. #ThanksMom

And of course no first week of city adventures would be complete without a trip to Times Square! The fam and I took in a show (“If/Then” starring Frozen and Wicked’s Idina Menzel), then headed to Haven for drinks.

Word on the street was that the Biebs was in town, so giddy gals were crawling all over the sidewalks and avenues. Biebs was a no-show. However, I did catch a glimpse of Aretha Franklin herself, coming out of Motown and getting into her car! We had a moment. Well, I certainly did at any rate.

Do I look like a New Yorker yet? Or does that not happen until you exit Times Square…

  1. New York is written all over you! That is so cool that you’re interning at Marie Claire! Good luck. Hopefully you won’t have to go search for a manuscript of the 8th Harry Potter book. 😛
