(A version of this article ran August 4, 2014, in The Independent Florida Alligator’s “On Trend, On a Budget” blog.)
As it’s the last “On Trend, On a Budget” column of the summer, I figure I’ll leave you with one of the most predominant trends of the sunshine season. Let’s pull back the door to the arsenal of style – wide enough to climb over the jelly sandals, reach past the skorts and Gandalf hats, and head for the big guns.
This harbinger of the ever-present ‘90s persuasion is my final pick because of its ubiquity and versatility. Wearable everywhere from the beach to the park, be your weather hot or a bit breezy, this fantastic fashion tops my list of trending looks you can grab on a budget.
Drum roll, please: The overalls.
I mean, it’s not for nothing that fashion blogger Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller named her book “The Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls.” I think if we’re all honest with ourselves, we can certainly agree that a nice pair of denim overalls can instill in one’s heart a serious case of infatuation.
If you’re shaking your head no, then I’m pretty confident you just haven’t found your pair yet.
Overalls are wonderful because – similar to the skort – they’re actually a functional trend. You can run and leap and dance to your heart’s desire, but unlike the skort, this majestic style doesn’t quit at the waist. With an extension of fabric coming all the way up the shoulders, that’s twice the coverage (so much more room for activities)!
And also unlike the skort, the overalls offer an endless list of styling options. And don’t forget that overalls’ versatility also means you can wear them as shorts or pants.
If you like to bare a little skin, pair your overalls with a cropped top beneath. A flash of waist is nothing when your midriff is still safely covered up by your favorite clothing item. Plus, it’s way more ‘90s that way, right? Check out the super rad Urban Renewal Mud Cloth Overall Short at Urban Outfitters, now on sale for $39.99.
If you’re into a classic-but-still-updated overalls style, look to the Blank NYC Crossover-All Overalls on sale for $75.60 at NastyGal.com. This particular pair is business in the front and party in the back – fun criss-crossing straps give the back an unexpected edge.
You can even trade up your denim for some pleather overalls, like this pair from ASOS for $32.89.
Whether you cut them short from denim or long in faux leather, you can bet overalls will remain the best overall in my book! What’s your top summer style?
